Taylor Swift became the record holder for the best download debut by a female musician after she outstripped Britney Spears’ record of the most downloaded single on its first week.
The multi-awarded country star had her song, ‘Today Was a Fairytale’, downloaded 325,000 times in the previous week, compared to Spears’ record of 286,000 downloads of her 2008 hit ‘Womanizer’.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, the chart compilers of Billboard, the song from Swift’s new movie ‘Valentine’s Day’ was confirmed to be her first number one hit on the Digital Songs chart. The song will also earn the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The official release of both music charts will be on Thursday.
However, Swift’s number one debut may be hampered by the dance track ‘Tik Tok’ by Ke$ha, which will claim its sixth-straight week at the top spot.
The Black Eyed Peas still holds the record for the most successful opening week for their smash hit ‘Boom Boom Pow’ in April last year. The song was downloaded 465,000 times. It remained at the top of the pop charts in the US for 12 weeks.
Meanwhile, songs performed at the ‘Hope for Haiti Now’ celebrity telethon have also earned thousands of downloads this week. According to Billboard.com, there have been as much as 334,000 downloads in just two days.
The most downloaded song from the telethon was ‘Stranded’, which was performed by Rihanna, Bono, Jay-Z and The Edge, with 131,000 downloads. It was followed by ‘Hallelujah’, a Leonard Cohen song performed by Matt Morris and Justin Timberlake.
