Soundgarden will reunite for concerts this year, according to lead singer Chris Cornell. The Soundgarden front man posted the message on his Twitter page. The message directed fans to Soundgardenworld.com, the band’s new Web site.
The Seattle-based rock band, composed of Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd,, has not played live together since calling it quits in 1997.
The group has been considering offers from several major festivals, but a proper tour plan has yet to be furnished because of Cameron’s previous commitment to play with Pearl Jam starting this spring, according to sources.
Since 1998, Cameron has been the drummer for Pearl Jam, who recently announced their plans for 2010, including a slot at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which will run from 29 April to 2 May, and 10 shows in Europe starting 22 June in Dublin and ending on 10 July in Portugal.
Years after the split of Soundgarden, it has been reported that the members have not communicated with Cornell, who initially refused to reunite with the band for Sub Pop’s 20th anniversary concerts held in Seattle in 2008. On 24 March 2009, Cornell was also missing for an impromptu gig featuring the three other members at Seattle’s Crocodile Cafe. Thayil, Shepherd and Cameron went on to play Soundgarden songs with Tad Doyle as the singer.
The four members, however, were on hand during a Pearl Jam show in Los Angeles on 6 October 2009. Since then, plans for a reunion developed.
