Rihanna, for months, has chosen to remain mum on the controversy with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. But the singer finally shattered her wall of silence when she spoke to Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America” about domestic violence and her relationship with Brown.
She explained of her silence earlier being a result of the shame she felt after police photos showing her bruised and battered self were leaked.
“There are a lot of women who experienced what I did, but not in the public, so [that] made it really difficult,” Rihanna said. “I just thought ‘Oh my God,’ here goes my little bit of privacy. Nobody wants anybody to know, and here I am, the whole world knowing.”
Rihanna admitted that Brown was her first love but growing in love put their relationship in a whirlwind of turmoil.
“I didn’t want people to think that I fell in love with that person. That’s embarrassing that that’s the type of person I fell so far in love with, so unconditionally, that I went back,” she said.
But the singer grew up, and with the help of her family and fans, finally had the courage to speak. Her new album “Rated R”, due on November 23, will also feature a stronger Rihanna.
“I have grown up a lot since my last album. It [represents] exactly where I am at right now,” she told Glamour Magazine. “The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard.”
