“Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen”.
These were the last thoughts Conan O’Brien had on his last night on the ‘Tonight Show’. O’Brien had hosted the talk show for seven months and tried to fight for it during the last few weeks.
Although he gave up fighting for his “dream” to stay in the show, he is positive about his future and wishes that his fans will also be the same. “All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism—it’s my least favourite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere”, the 46-year-old comedian said.
O’Brien ended his hosting duties on the ‘Tonight Show’ on Friday after reaching an agreement with NBC, wherein he would be given $45 million to quit the late night programme so that Jay Leno can return to the show. Leno will be returning to the 11:35 p.m. time slot on 1 March.
During his farewell episode, the red-haired comedian joked that he would like Tilda Swinton to portray him in case HBO would do a movie about the late-night fiasco of NBC.
Aside from making jokes during the show, O’Brien also sincerely expressed his gratefulness to the fans and to NBC.
“I have worked with NBC for over 20 years. Yes, we have our differences right now and yes, we’re going to go our separate ways, but this company has been my home for most of my adult life. I am enormously proud of the work we have done together, and I want to thank NBC for making it all possible”.
