Mel Gibson’s slip sparks controversy

Mel Gibson is again stepping on shaky ground after making a vulgar comment while being taped for a segment on WGN-TV to promote his new movie ‘Edge of Darkness’

Dean Richard, the reporter for the Chicago network, asked the actor if he felt like “a different person, a better person,” compared to four or five years ago due to “a lot of ups and downs” he had gone through. The remark referred to the episode Gibson was involved in back in 2006 when he was arrested for drunk driving and offending his arresting officers.

In the interview, Gibson replied that the past has been “a real roller coaster ride”, but he believes that he has never changed. The reporter then asked the actor/director what he thought of the public’s view on him now after the incident. A disturbed Gibson replied: “That’s been almost four years, dude. I’ve moved on. But I guess you haven’t.”

Richards continued by saying that he only wondered if Gibson thought the public has forgotten the incident. Gibson responded that it was all in the past and he wanted everyone to move on.

After the standard concluding remarks, Gibson gave a thumbs-up to the reporter before saying the word “a–hole” before the broadcast was cut.

Gibson’s publicist Alan Nierob said the actor addressed the comment not at Richards, but at Nierob himself, who was making faces during the segment.

Richards, meanwhile, wrote that the interview “was pleasant enough for the first half but as my questions became more challenging, his tone and even physical demeanour changed”. He added, “famous person or not, the true measure of a person is how they act when they think no one is looking”.
