Madonna tired of being called ‘Madge

Madonna300x200Madonna has returned to America after she grew tired of being referred to as ‘Madge’ in Britain, she told US talk show host David Letterman.

The nickname, which was how film director and ex-hubby Guy Ritchie often called her, made the singer feel “boring and middle-aged”.

Madonna also said that she would “rather get run over by a train” than be married again.

The singer, who is currently residing in New York, was dubbed ‘Madge’ by British press since she transferred to London during the 1990s.

Typically a nickname for Margaret, Marjorie or Madeleine, the name ‘Madge’ is widely associated with the housewife character portrayed by Anne Charleston in ‘Neighbours’, an Australian soap opera.

However, it is believed that Richie apparently told the actress that it was a shortcut for ‘Your Majesty’.

Madonna told Letterman: “You know, that’s one of the reasons I left England, so I don’t have to hear the word ‘Madge’ any more”.

“People say it means two different things. Some people say that ‘Madge’ is a colloquialism – do you know that word? – for kind of like a boring, middle-aged housewife. And other people say it’s short for ‘Majesty’,” she added.

Letterman then replied that being a middle-aged housewife does have “some majesty” to it, to which Madonna agreed and said: “Yes, I think it can be quite respectable.”

When asked if she still has plans to get married again, the singer, who is currently dating 22-year-old Brazilian model Jesus Luz, said “I think I would rather get run over by a train.”

It was the eighth time that Madonna appeared on ’The Late Show with David Letterman’. In her appearance in the said show in 1994, she mentioned the f-word for about 13 times, making the show the most censored US programme in the history of talk shows.
