During the MTV Video Music Awards held Sunday in New York City, Madonna delivered a speech as tribute to the King of Pop Michael Jackson.
The show started with the 50-year-old singer taking the stage dressed all in black. She mentioned that they both were born in August of 1958 and belong to big midWestern families. She then stated that their only difference is that she experienced a childhood while Michael didn’t.
Madonna shared her memories with Jackson; about how they had dinner together in 1991 and she tried to make him eat French fries, say “bad words” and drink. They then went to her home and watched a movie. Later, Madonna said that they held hands. According to her, it was a moment when Jackson “felt like a human being”. They lost communication with each other for several years. When Jackson died on the 25th of June, Madonna was in London.
She also added that when he died, “all I could think about him in that one moment was, ‘I had abandoned him,’ that we had abandoned him. That we had allowed this magnificant creature that once set the world on fire somehow slip through the cracks. When he was trying to build a family and rebuild his career, we were all busy passing judgment. Most of us had turned our backs on him… Sometimes, we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them…”
At the end of her speech, she revealed the obsession of her own two sons, 9-year-old Rocco and 4-year-old David, with Michael Jackson. “There’s a whole lot of crotch grabbing and Moonwalking going on in my house!” she told the audience.
