Thursday saw a Polish nationalist group condemning a planned concert of the pop diva Madonna this weekend in Warsaw, labelling her a “crypto-Satanist”, who desires to insult Christianity.

Many devout Roman Catholics in the very Catholic Poland were upset of the fact that Madonna has chosen to debut her Polish concert on August 15, the day Christians mark the ascension of the Virgin Mary to heaven.

“Madonna specializes in offending religious feelings… It is possible to suspect her of being a crypto-Satanist,” said Marian Baranski, deputy head of the “Faith and National Tradition Defense Committee ‘Pro Polonia,’” in a news conference.

“Madonna sneers at Jesus Christ, the symbol of the cross and all Christians,” said a former Polish parliament member, Zygmunt Wrzodak.

However, the group said that the planned protest at the concert venue on Saturday had been called off to prevent provoking incidences of “riots.”

Madonna, whose name is synonymous with the Virgin Mary, has earned the ire of conservative Christians when she kissed an actor who played Jesus in one among her videos and including a crucifixion in her previous world tour.

Last month, even Lech Walesa, the former leader of anti-communist Solidarity trade union in Poland and the country’s former president, asked Madonna to change the date of her concert in Warsaw.

15 August is a date doubly sensitive for Polish nationalists because it is also the same day when the Poles celebrate their victory over the Soviet forces in 1920.

“This is the anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw… when the Polish army defended our country from the barbarism flooding in from the east. Now the barbarism is coming from the west,” said ‘Pro Polonia’ group member Pawel Zieminski.
