Supermodel Kate Moss received criticisms from anti-eating disorder activists on Thursday after she used a pro-anorexia slogan as her motto.
According to fashion website WWD, when asked about her motto, Moss answered, “There are loads. There’s ‘Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’. That’s one of them. You try and remember, but it never works”.
The slogan has been posted on Internet sites, such as Starving for Control, that discourage girls from eating.
Several anti-eating disorder campaigners expressed negative reactions about Moss’ interview. Her words were called “very unfortunate” by Mary George of the British eating-disorder charity Beat.
George said, “comments like this make it even more difficult” for people struggling with eating disorders.
Reuters also quoted Beat’s Chief Executive, Susan Ringwood, as saying, “It’s one that’s used so prominently and so obviously in connection with pro-anorexic websites”.
In her interview with The Sun, Katie Green, a model campaigning against ultra thin models, called Moss’ comments “shocking and irresponsible”.
Storm, the modelling agency of Moss, defended the model and said that she has been misinterpreted. The modelling agency said in a statement that the controversial slogan was part of Kate’s longer answer given during the interview. It was just “taken out of context and completely misrepresented”.
It added, “For the record, Kate does not support this as a lifestyle choice”.
The 35-year-old Moss became popular for having a waif-life appearance that also sparked a fad for super skinny models during the 1990s.
