It’s doomsday for Cusack in “2012″

Risk-taking roles seem to follow John Cusack with movies like “Being John Malkovich”, “Grosse Pointe Blank”, “Say Anything” or “Grace is Gone”. But the actor is in a riskier situation with his new apocalyptic movie entitled “2012″ as his character deals with the end of the world.

“There’s disaster movies, and then there are end of days, and that means that there’s no place you can escape. It’s the big one,” Cusack said of the movie, which refers to the Mayan prediction that the world will end on 21 December 2012.

During his interview with “Early Show” co-anchor Harry Smith, Cusack mentioned that he has been interested in the concept of the world’s doom, since he was a kid.

“Growing up as a lapse Catholic, I was very aware of the book of Revelations and the symbolism and the imagery and everything,” the actor said.

As for taking on a more action-oriented role, Cusack said that he did experience it with “Conair” in 1997. He admits that he is into doing action films, but leading action actors like Harrison Ford usually get the roles. “I sneaked in the back door and somehow got this one,” Cusack said.

The host also recalled his famous boom box scene in “Say Anything”. Cusack joked that today; the boom box, which he held above his head to capture the heart of the girl he admired, would be an iPod.

“I’m amazed that people still remember the movie, but it was a really fun time in my life, and I was really proud of the movie, and how it did,” he said. “It’s a nice thing that people remember something you did.”
