Ellen DeGeneres makes debut on ‘Idol

TV personality Ellen DeGeneres made her debut on the show ‘American Idol’ as one of the judges on Tuesday.

Fans of the show caught their first glimpse of the comedienne at the jury of FOX’s singing competition.

Before she sat down, DeGeneres addressed the contestants at the Kodak Theatre, and explained to them what she thought her job was on ‘Idol’.

“I don’t know how you feel right now, but I’ll tell you one thing, that when people say, ‘What do you know about music?’ I’ll tell you what I do know. I do know what it’s like to stand on stage and try to please an entire room full of people”, said the 52-year-old TV host. She added that pleasing people is a very hard task to do.

DeGeneres first critiqued the contestants regarding their stage presence. “You were like a leopard in a cage… Don’t frighten your audience”, said DeGeneres to one of the hopefuls.

DeGeneres found herself paying a small tribute to Paula Abdul, an ex-judge of ‘Idol’. Abdul’s decision of not going back to ‘Idol’ as a judge for the show’s ninth season opened the door for DeGeneres to become a part of the panel.

When a contestant sang an acoustic rendition of Abdul’s hit single ‘Straight Up’, Kara DioGuardi made a comment that Abdul would perhaps scream and clap after the performance. DeGeneres added, “She’d be doing this for you right now”, while demonstrating what Abdul’s reaction could have been.
