The harsh real-life drama by Taiwanese director Leon Dai entitled ‘No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti’ won as best feature at the annual Golden Horse Film Awards. The awards ceremony is considered to be the most prestigious for Chinese-language movies and is modelled after the Oscars.

The film is based on the true story of a single father who lives in the working-class city of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and his fight against the Taiwanese government in order to get his daughter accepted into school. Unsuccessful, he threatens to end his life by jumping off a bridge.

During the awards ceremony on Saturday, ‘No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti’ won over four other finalists.

The Golden Horse trophy for best director went to Dai, who became emotional when he accepted his prize. Dai has already directed two other movies and has even acted in a series of art house productions in Taiwan.

“I’d like to thank the people of Kaohsiung, no matter whether the government or the everyday citizens”, said the 43-year-old director. “We couldn’t have been able to finish it without their support”.

The best actress award went to actress Li Bingbing of the spy thriller ‘The Message’. The award for best actor was won, for the first time, by two actors, Nick Cheung of the Hong Kong action film ’The Beast Stalker’ and Huang Bo of the war-themed black comedy ‘Cow’ from China.
