Carey Mulligan targets another film gong

Carey Mulligan, a best actress nominee in this year’s Oscars and Baftas, has her focus set on the London Evening Standard awards for the same category.

Spectators are not expecting Mulligan to appear in the event. She is up against Anne-Marie Duff, who starred as John Lennon’s mother in ‘Nowhere Boy’, and Kelly Macdonald, who starred as a fugitive in ‘The Merry Gentleman’, Michael Keaton’s debut as a director.

Andy Serkis, who was also nominated for one Bafta award, is nominated for the best actor category in the Evening Standard Awards for his role in Ian Dury’s biographical film ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’. Serkis will be competing against actor Tom Hardy for ‘Bronson’, Alex MacQueen for ‘The Hide’, and Christian McKay for ‘Me & Orson Welles’.

In addition, three of the biggest names in British comedy, namely Sacha Baron Cohen, Peter Capaldi, and Ricky Gervais, are all up for the Peter Sellers award for comedy.

Jane Campion’s ‘Bright Star’; ‘Helen’, a story about a young girl’s disappearance; and ‘Fish Tank’, winner of Cannes’ Jury Prize, are all up for the best film trophy.

Actress Katie Jarvis was also shortlisted under the category of most promising newcomer. Jarvis was discovered while in the middle of an argument with her boyfriend. She will be pitted against Duncan Jones, for the direction of the drama film ‘Moon’, and Peter Strickland, for the screenplay and direction of ‘Katalin Varga’.
