Boyzone has announced that the band will be releasing a new song featuring the late Stephen Gately on vocals. It is the first song that they will release since the death of Gately last year. The song entitled ‘Gave it All Away’ will be out on 1 March and will be followed by the release of the new album ‘Brother’ on 8 March.
The 33-year-old Gately was found dead at his holiday home in Spain in October last year.
The song will feature Gately singing the opening lines: “I will learn to live before I die”.
Bandmate Ronan Keating described the video for the song as “incredibly raw”. The video will feature pieces of archived footage showing Gately and his bandmates intercut with new footage showing the band writing letters to Gately.
Keating, along with other Boyzone members Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham and Keith Duffy, will also be seen in the video, shedding tears for their late bandmate.
“It’s us reminiscing about the good times and the laughter”, Keating said. “There’s a nice scene of us four brothers sat around a table… with Stephen’s favourite picture hanging up behind us”.
“Phil (Griffin, director) just filmed us fly-on-the-wall for that so it’s just us as we are”, he added. “We wanted the footage to be as truthful and honest as possible based on how we were feeling and were reacting during the making of the video on that day”.
Keating pointed out that he and the band “didn’t want it being too mournful all the way through”.
