James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ has stayed at No. 1 in the box office for four straight weeks. Hollywood.com Box Office also estimates the sci-fi flick to have raked in $48.5 million.

Despite other films taking a 50% plunge in box office sales, ‘Avatar’ managed to hold on to the no. 1 position with only a 29% percent decline as it continues to break records in the process. For one, it knocked ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ off the no. 1 spot as the highest grossing film in 2009.

The film also surpassed ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ to grab the 7th spot as America’s highest grosser. Next weekend, the 3D-epic could possibly move to the no. 3 spot.

Sailing behind ‘Avatar’ is another Cameron gem, ‘Titanic’, which earned $28.7 million during its fourth weekend. But the question on most filmgoers’ minds is: will ‘Avatar’ pass the behemoth love story and take the box-office throne both domestically and internationally?

To put numbers on the table, ‘Titanic’ earned $600.8 million in domestic sales and grossed $1.8 billion internationally. ‘Avatar’ is currently behind with $429 million in domestic sales and $1.3 billion globally. The answer is: we all have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, ‘Sherlock Holmes’ is steady at second place with $16.6 million on its third weekend at the box office, grossing $165.2 million. In third place is ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel’ with $16.3 million, totalling to $178.2 million.

Ethan Hawke’s ‘Daybreakers’ grabbed the fourth spot with $15 million while ‘It’s Complicated’ took the fifth place with $11 million.

The weekend also saw two releases with budgets less than $20 million: ‘Leap Year’, which stars Amy Adams, taking the sixth place and ‘Youth in Revolt’, starring Michael Cera, grabbing the ninth spot.
